The Saltaire I love is a tranquil community free of traffic, commercial activity, and noise. Saltaire must remain a haven for us, our children and for those who will follow. Saltaire faces serious challenges: renourishing the beach, rebuilding the dock and marina, repairing or replacing the parking lot bulkheading in Bay Shore, and buying a new fire pumper. We also face other no less challenging or important issues – preserving the character of our community as people with different expectations and values come to join us; balancing the legitimate interests of Saltaire’s year-round residents with those for whom Saltaire is a second home; and assuring that our political process operates civilly and collegially. Given the capital projects confronting the Village, we must identify all reasonable economies while taking care that we do not economize at the expense of our Village employees or necessary services. I hope to hear from all those who want to ask me my thoughts about specific issues, or who would like to alert me to some concern which I should address or consider. Please contact me by email (fw5@columbia.edu), by phone (631-583-5042; 212-222-1164), or simply stop me on the walks or drop by 200 Navy Walk (at the corner of Harbor). I am not new to Saltaire politics. I have played a constructive role in shaping the agenda of the Village both as an active citizen and as a member of the Board of Trustees. I have attended virtually every Trustee meeting for a decade, whether on or off the Board, and am “up to speed” on the issues confronting Saltaire. If elected, I will listen carefully to all positions and then vote for what I believe to be in the long-run interests of the Village. For those who don’t know me, I taught political science at Drew University in Madison, NJ for eleven years after completing my doctorate. I am currently the Dean of the School of the School of Continuing Education at Columbia. I have also done a number of things as a volunteer – I was president of the tenants association of a 400-unit Mitchell-Lama apartment complex in Manhattan; I served on the Board of the Columbia Committee for Community Service, a Morningside Heights charity; and I volunteered for eight years for the Gay Men’s Health Crisis. I have been in Saltaire since 1979. In Saltaire, I have been on the Planning Commission, was a member of the Fire Safety Committee, and served for two years as a Trustee from 2000-02. I live on the Upper West Side, and am fortunate that my son and daughter-in-law, Josh and Laura Wolf-Powers, live in Park Slope, enabling them to visit Saltaire quite regularly. I
would very much appreciate your vote.
